Rite of the Devouring Torch
A Working of Hecate — the Feast of Torches
There is one night in the height of summer when the torch-bearing goddess steps out of the dark she is usually associated with and stands in the open — and makes her demand before the harvest is completed. She comes in August because August is when there is still something to lose.
This is a group ritual working dedicated to Hecate in her aspect as the Torch-Bearer and the Lady of Storms, performed on the night of August 13th — the Feast of the Torches, the Hecatean Ides, the night drawn from the ancient Nemoralia when women carried flames through the darkness to the sacred lake and made their offerings before the storm season could take everything they had grown.
This is not the Hecate of autumn's gentle decline into darkness. This is the Hecate who governs the height of summer: who was propitiated in the Zerinthian cave against terrors and storms, whose torch-lit procession the Romans held at the grove at Nemi to petition the goddess before the harvest could be destroyed, and who receives the Deipnon offering — the supper left at the crossroads for her and the wandering dead — at the dark moon closest to the feast. She comes in August to illuminate what is standing and what is at risk before the storm decides for you.
Each participant will receive the complete ritual text, the sigil to use in the working, and an image of Hecate to print and place on your altar if desired.
On the night of August 13th, make the preparations described in the ritual text and proceed to perform the working in your home temple, with torchlight or significant candlelight if possible, and with a window or door open to the summer night. Each participant performs the ritual at the same hour – approximately an hour after sunset, and I will perform it simultaneously, binding all participants through the astral connection to accumulate the energy and maximize the depth of the working.
I will remain open to whatever communications or visions may come through during and after the ritual, and following the working I will send you a personal email confirming the ritual and including any message that came through for you specifically. If the message requires interpretation, I am available to assist.
Through this ritual I will open the crossroads and the current of Hecate for you, establishing an astral connection with the goddess in her August aspect. What she illuminates by torchlight on her feast night is not what she shows you at the equinox or at Samhain. She shows what has been built and what is threatened, what you have been protecting and whether your protection is honest.
Who is Hecate in This Working?
– The ancient torch-bearer, older than the Qliphothic systems that later recognized her as kin to the Draconian current — three-formed, three-faced, governing the crossroads where the living, the dead, and the unseen converge.
– The Lady of Storms: the force that was propitiated in the Zerinthian cave mysteries in Samothrace to save initiates from terrors and destruction, the one whose torch both illuminates and burns, who protects what survives her own honest assessment of it.
– The Torch-Bearer of the Nemoralia: the goddess at the center of the Roman Festival of Torches, honored in August by procession and firelight, receiving petitions at the water's edge before the harvest is cut and the storm season begins.
– The Keeper of the Deipnon: the goddess who receives the monthly supper at the crossroads and guards the threshold between the living and the dead, between what has been earned and what will be taken.
– Her geometry is the triangle; her hour is the threshold between summer's peak and the first turning toward autumn; her gift is not gentleness but clarity — the unflinching torch-light that shows exactly what has been kept carefully unexamined.
